Sonny Rollins Live in '65 & '68

Rollins is joined by some of the most legendary sidemen in jazz history, including 19-year-old Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, drum master Alan Dawson and pianist Kenny Drew. The performances on this DVD feature two incredible versions of his signature tune “St. Thomas,” and reinforce why Sonny Rollins’ incomparable style and genius continue to influence new generations of young jazz musicians.

Cannonball Adderley (alto sax), Nat Adderley (cornet) and the masterful Yusef Lateef (tenor sax, flute, oboe), provide a massive three-horn frontline attack, while the stellar rhythm section featuring a pre-Weather Report Joe Zawinul (piano), Sam Jones (bass) and Louis Hayes (drums) fuel the songs with a deep infectious swing. Quincy Jones’ “Jessica’s Day” leaps from the gate with a huge “big band” sound that is extraordinary for only six musicians. This DVD is a reminder that Cannonball Adderley was one of the most outstanding and highly respected alto saxophonists in the history of jazz, a blues-based jazzman who could play anything in superb fashion.

This collection covers an 11-year span, highlighting Evans’ ever-deepening artistry as he performs with four different all-star rhythm sections, including the stunning duo of bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and drummer Alan Dawson. This DVD includes for the first time on home video Evans’ renditions of the rarely performed “Sareen Jurer,” “Blue Serge” and “Twelve Tone Tune Two.” Among the many surprises in this collection is a live performance of “My Melancholy Baby” with saxophonist Lee Konitz.

This legendary ’60s trio consisting of Peterson on piano, longtime partner Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums toured the world over, and are still considered one of the most formidable jazz combos ever. This DVD features a very early performance of Peterson’s signature tune “Hymn To Freedom,” as well as a special guest segment showcasing the amazing Clark Terry on trumpet and flugelhorn.
